Sony NEX-5 Review

Sony NEX-5 Camera

Sony enters the foray into the interchangeable lens compact camera market with this new release, the Sony NEX-5.

This is Sony's response to the micro-SLRs from Panasonic and Olympus but how will it stack up against them!?

The NEX-5 has a 14.2MP APS-C sensor which is no shrinking violet, and is actually the same size to those used in most DSLRs. This adds up to amazingly crisp photographs even at higher ISO settings. It also allows the option to shoot sharp, focused subjects with beautiful blurry backgrounds.

The lens mount is compatible with their range of E-mount lenses, only three of which are currently available. Those are: 16mm f2.8, 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 and 18-200mm f3.5-6.3. You can purchase the Sony LA-EA1 Adaptor which will allow you to use lenses for the Sony DSLR A-mount.

The flash for the Sony NEX-5 is a top mounted flash which comes in the box, so no built in flash. This means no use of the optical viewfinder or microphone accessories at the same time as the flash.

The ace up the NEX-5s sleeve is it's Sweep Panorama. Just press the shutter button, then move the camera in a slow arc across any panoramic view that takes your fancy, and the camera fires off a sequence of shots before seamlessly stitching them together into a single 8192-1856 image. There is also AVCHD 1080i quality video and stereo sound. The lenses have been engineered so that any focussing or zooming noise is not picked up in the movies.

This Sony Camera is very compact and light when compared with other interchangeable lens camera's, and with its 16mm lens, is almost like any other compact! The magnesium alloy body and aluminum lenses are a beautiful marriage giving the camera a very classy, expensive appearance. They have even made room for a tilting 3in TruBlack screen for framing at awkward angles.
